My New Button Quail, and Questions Too!

Here is a mismarked tux of my own (i have more than one):

it's just like having a mismarked rabbit, or a mismarked dog, even though it may have colors out of place or not as fluent as they should be they are still a purebred just not marked correctly.

welcome welcome! always happy to help out newbie coturnix quail owners! I had a heck of a time finding info in the begining so I love helping others when they're starting out. It can get confusing. If you have any questions just PM or email me ([email protected]) would love to help!

Huh. Cool

It looks almost identical to my "mutt" hen. So what happens when you put a Tux back with a Tibetan, do you know?

(sorry, not trying to hijack thread, but thought maybe OP would like the answer too because looks like they may have those kinds of eggs this spring too.)

You can get this:

^^ a VERY dark (almost black looking) bird (the bird on the far left bottom corner of the picture that's really dark) with some white below the throat (ignore the red arrows on the other birds that was for a fellow coturnix breeder I was showing him how his birds he sold me as eggs are doing) LOL

Or you could get this:

^ bird in bottom of the picture, both birds in this picture are Tuxedos, however the one on the bottom has TWO tuxedo/tibe genes which make it darker, it lacks the tannish stripes that normal tuxedos have. It's still a tuxedo but just darker. Theres no standard discription for a darker tibe or tuxedo other than it's darker.

some call them chocolates however that's not the offical name...it's either Tibe or tux or mismark tux.

Since a Tuxedo is nothing more than a Tibetan mixed with an A &M, when you breed a tuxedo back to a Tibetan, you get a darker version....however some breeders have gotten even lighter versions by breeding back to a tibetan.....this breeder i've talked to feels that the gene may be Homozygous. Again even though it can turn out even lighter than normal it will still be a tibetan or a tuxedo.

By the way for confusion sake....Tibetan is also known as British Range.

Ahhh... so sweet.

You'll love the coturnix more than the Buttons, I'm betting. Much more personable.

I have a few that will come right up to me, talking the whole way, and let me pick them up and snuzzle them. You won't get a Button to do that, though I have to admit they're pretty little birds.
Congratulations on your present!

I agree, even though she thought buttons, I'd say that Coturnix are a way better first quail!

However my hen button quail is as sweet as my coturnix but I believe it's only because the dumby thinks im her mate!

I was a little disappointed at first, to find out they were not buttons. I was excited to have birds that would stay cute and tiny. But after reading good things about the coturnix, and how they are pretty friendly, I am glad to have them.
Last night, I watched the movie Blood Diamond. I held one of the babies, and it slept in my hand throughout the whole movie! Just like a chick or a duckling. It woke up twice, to poop (lol) then cuddled back against me and fell asleep. I love to raise babies in the house, because it is soooo much fun to play with them and watch them grow. Then, once they are transferred outside, they usually stay pretty tame. I hope the same will be true with these quail.
I also can't wait for the first egg! I've heard quail eggs are good, so we shall see. Just a few weeks to go!

the eggs ARE drool worthy! My aunt who is a cook at fancy smancy resturant in Maryland (or baltimore i forget which area she works in now) is going to be ordering atleast 3 dozen of my coturnix eggs from me this spring, shes' driving the whole way here (6 hours one way) to pick them up so she can have a special from MY eggs for the resturant! I cant wait he he!

They do stay sweet once transfered outside. Mine cry when they hear me coming because they know mamas coming with food and i usually call back "oooh i know i NEVER feed you guys im so sorry babies!" they do this yelk that sounds similar to a hen turkeys yelk. I just love them to peices! I have one golden/A & M cross coturnix that ignores food and plasters his or herself to the side of the pen and chortles at me until i stick my finger through and scritch the back of her head. I call it a her, but i think it's a male...so hard to tell on a mixed colored coturnix ahhh! Either way it's names Tundra.

They still eat out of my hands, however it's been too cold for me to stay up there and offer their food on my hands i normally just feed them make sure everyones doing good and cover them backup.

Believe me, buttons are cute, tiny and pretty, but MOST want nada to do with you. So since you obviously enjoy contact with your birds Coturnix are your best bet!
