My NEW feeders!

What are the bottoms made of? Water plates for a pot plant? They look a lot stronger than the ones I have seen around here?

They are plant pot bottoms. I couldn't find any that big at WM so I had to go to Home Depot but they were good and sturdy. But since they are bolted to the bucket they don't have too strong since they are only holding the food the comes out of the buckets.

Do you think that I could make one from a kitty litter bucket?

You could totally do that! I have some of those in my garage I thought about converting to feeders too, but I don't know anyone else who has chickens LoL

The kitty litter bucket was too big, so I used a Sherbet container. The chickens were scared of it and flew all over and spilled everything. It sits on the floor now. Silly birds

I have a lot of food grade buckets that my local grocery store so kindly threw out (hey, they gave me permission to raid the trash!) but haven't figured out what goes under the bucket. What is that plate?

It's the bottom of a planter.. a BIG planter. I couldn't find any hard plastic ones. I had to get a clear flimsy one. It worked, just might not last as long as this one.

I work at a casino so the food service ppl gave them to me for free but you can get free buckets at most any restaurant. I want to hit up my favorite chinese place so I can get the Kikkoman buckets, give the coop an asian theme LoL

FisherMom. Did you hang the feeder? Mine hang in the coop and at first the birds were weirded out but then they chowed down...the food was more important than fear I guess LoL

Hooligan - I made a couple of feeders and wateres exactly like that, and they work GREAT.

Everyone - If you made a waterer, make sure the lid is airtight, or the water will just keep running over the pan lip (It doesn't say this on the BYC instructions).

Sorry, but my mind went the wrong direction when I looked at the sentence the first time...

I actually did this with my waterer last year and put the holes at the top of the bucket for water, instead of the bottom. They don't hang, but I put the oil pan (never used for oil) on top of it, then flip it over. I need to find my buckets and do this again because they get low on water nearly every day, especially when it's hot. Actually though, I got some of those watering cups Mrs. AK-Bird-brain showed us on her alaskan breeding paradise. lol I just need to get it set up with a bucket on the nesting boxes--as soon as I get my cockerels out of there and into my new coop. Right now I don't have enough roosts for everyone and a couple of my babies are sleeping up there at night.

yeah, I hung it up. But it was also the same day I introduced 3 new chickens to the flock... maybe that was too much NEW STUFF. Maybe I will try again. thanks! A chicken flew helter skelter in the coop and the feeder came smashing down. I even ended up with a chicken or two on my head that day!

I asked at my local grocery deli yesterday and they gave me a 5 gal bucket w/lid for feeder.

From stories I'm a little leary of doing this with water though, it sounds tricky. I might just buy a waterer.
