My family recently moved out to a farm and it is a fixer upper, but look at this little goody! From what I have been able to gather, this 15x25 hen house was built by my neighbor's great grandfather and is more than 140 years old. Because we are in the middle of our renovation, this was on the list to be demolished. But then I got into chickens and fell in live with it! It doesn't look like much now, but will be cute as a button when I'm done with it
Even though it doesn't look like it, I have already put a lot of work into this building. The property used to be used as a commercial dairy goat farm and the hen house was used to hold some of the goats, so last month I got to shovel out 3 foot of goat manure. This past weekend it was power washed 3 times but still needs it again and needs to be sanitized.
So here is the plan for this week: the window openings need to be reframed for new windows and needs wired over with galvanized welded wire. Then the door opening need fitted for doors, and the main door is getting a new Dutch door! I found a really cool idea in Hobby Farm's Chickens magazine for a DIY automatic waterer, so that will be getting installed as well.
So here is where I need suggestions: I live in Iowa and there used to be a lot of hen houses like this, but as far as I can tell they have all been demolished. Does ANYONE have a hen house like this that has been restored? If not, I would like suggestions on how to make this hen house nice again!
