You might want to get a bottle of styptic powder to keep on hand. I keep one in the bathroom medicine cabinet. I probably need to check to see if it has an expiration date. I've had it a while and never used it. However, it's there and ready if needed for person, dog, cat, bird, etc. .

I think the powder would be better than the pencil -- you don't have to actually touch anything to the wound. Just drop a bit of powder onto it.
