My Non-Chicken Hobbies

How many do you have? Ours are simmental crosses as well. We just have a small herd, as we have a land shortage issue

I'm tempted to do a Holstein bull calf next year for veal. I think it's moral to use dairy bull calves for meat, rather than just shooting them in the head like many dairies do. I find veal, if raised ethically, is moral to eat. And it's delicious meaty goodness, too.

We milk our Nubians and make chevre. I have calculated it time and time again what it would take to do it commercially... I think $25k and we could be in production. I'd have to quit the day job though, so it would have to be large enough scale to replace my current income. It would be a huge plunge!

As far as cows go.... I do love the Jerseys with their big, black doe-eyes.

I love Jerseys and they are perfect for grass based dairy. I can't wait to have a small herd of my own.

5 heifers, 1 heifer calf, 1 cow, 2 steer for next year, and overwintering a bull and 3 additional heifers for a neighbor who's let me use the bull for clea-up. He's a small framed black angus, really a gentle fella, too.

There are 3 commercial diaries on the island here. They all use Brown Swiss to get the fat % up, since the herds are Holstein. The Brown Swiss have a very nice color and temperment to them... but yeah, Jerseys are like teddy bears. Gurensey's are very similar, but different colored, if yo'uve ever seen them.

Well, this the raging debate amongst winemakers!! Is "fruit wine" really wine, or does wine have to come from grapes? I tend to fall into the later category... even though I make Cider and it's considered "Apple Wine" by most classifiers.

So, if I had to make a grape wine, it would be a red merlot for sure. My favorite wines to drink, of course are also Merlots.... but, if you want me to die and go to heaven, buy me a bottle of Italian Barrollo.

My Dhs Dad made hard cider once... in his basement. He put raisins and spices in it and then forgot all about it. One day they heard a big BANG! from the basement. He had forgotten to let the pressure off the jug. DH said there was no remaining glass from the jug and they only found a couple raisins.

Oh yeah. I squished apples for a lady on Saturday who thinks apple juice is called "cider" as long as it's not filtered. Not fermenting apple juice into cider is a crime, but she is a customer so we do it anyhow.

So, she went away with 15 gallons in 1 gallon glass bottles. I warned her dozens of times that they must be refrigerated or they'll go boom. Let's see if I get any e-mails this week regarding exploding jugs....

Hi there.

Since you are kindly offering your advice, can I ask another question about cattle?

We were blessed with a truck full of pumpkins. We are feeding them to the pigs and have cut up a couple for the cows.
What are your thoughts on feeding the pumpkins to the cows?

Thanks
