My Non-Chicken Hobbies

Lucky cows!!

My pigs, though, get the lion's share of the pumpkins. I smash open some of the larger ones with a sledgehammer so they can get their snout started.

Pumpkins are simply great feed for any of your livestock, and of course the chickens will get the little bits which are too small for the piggies.

I drove past a field in the Willammette where the farmer looked like he disc'd the pumpkins to slice them, then let the cows in. Lucky cows!

I will never, ever be able to live without an AGA again. 4-oven, gas, color is "Claret".

My mother is from Herefordshire and my wife from North Yorkshire. Along our travels in England over all these years, we fell in love with the AGA's there. And we realized, too, that you cannot call yourself a farm or smallholding unless you have one.

So, we were out looking for property on which to build a hosue, since we wanted to feature an AGA in the kitchen. We wanted a 6 oven, gas, claret colored one. We stumbled upon an old farm here on teh island which had been remodeled recently, to include an AGA in the kitchen (the previous owner had travelled in the UK as a girl). It was even the rigth color. We figured it was too much of a sign to pass up, so here we are at the farm which has become Greyfields.

A potential tragedy was averted. The real estate agent actually told the previous owner to tear the AGA out, because no one would buy the house not knowing what they did or how to cook on them. I would have cried IRL had that been the case. The past owner is now situated near Denver and they had another AGA installed in their new home. All is well in the Universe.

Our neighbors have one, a six burner, it's a thing of beauty; they installed it as part of a big renovation and basically designed the entire kitchen around it. Good thing no one tried to tear yours out; AGA's are shipped flat and constructed on site. They are not easy to remove!

I think they weigh 2,200 lbs. They brought it in through the walls when they were redoing the siding and sheetrocking.

They are simply amazing. Combined with some nice heavy Le Cruset cooking dishes, the 225 simmering oven, the AGA is effortless cooking.
