My "Pinterest" Project Shed Build

How awesome is your coop! I stumbled onto your thread and really enjoyed the progression, now I'm gonna stick around and see how the rest turns out!

Awesome idea, looking forward to seeing the finished build :)

Thanks, me too!

Well, I finally heard back from the builder.

It's going to have to be gable end vents. I'm disappointed, but I suspected it would turn out that way.

I just hope that it will be adequate, because when I chose metal roof, my big concern was about heat building up under the peak.

I had originally asked for insulation under the roof. They told me that with the soffit and ridge vent system, insulation would not be helpful. I still have the soffit vents, but now there will be no ridge vent to draw the air up across where such insulation would lay. Do you guys think I should go back to the insulation idea?

Not really surprised they have declined to install ridge vent.....
......tho I'd be miffed that I paid for it and now they won't do whatever it takes and costs(them) to correct their error.
They should provide and install a big and beautiful triangular gable vent on the front.

Good sized gable vents, on both ends of building, should about work as well as a ridge vent would.
The corrugation of the roofing metal itself should send some of the metal generated heat up and out.
At least there's wood sheathing under that metal, some metal roofs only run on stringers.
The high steep peak on that roof will help too.

I attached some 1/4" foam insulation sheets on the bottom of the rafters on the south roof (asphalt shingles/felt/wood) of my coop shed,
airflow from open soffits to upper windows(clerestory roofline) could travel in space between insulation sheets and roofing boards......
......it kinda helped, but overall it did not lower the high temps inside coop on a hot day, just slowed down the heating up a bit.

Thank you for that info aart. I also asked the builder about revisiting the idea of insulation, and he is sticking with his opinion that it may lead to mold between the insulation and the decking. I suppose that risk outweighs what little benefit there would be in only reducing the heat a little.

There is already a gable vent on the front of the shed. I think it's about 1' x 2'. They are going to supply vents for the back of the shed and for the interior partition. Are you thinking I should replace the front gable with a bigger one? I guess I should request larger vents all around.

So I am probably not the best business dealer. We had no written contract of the work to be done. Just emails detailing what I wanted, with them replying, yes we can do that and the price range will be from X to Y. Final bill came out to just a little over Y. He was conscious in a lot of areas to try to keep costs down, mostly by leaving some things for me to do myself. (A lot of that was worked out prior.) So I suspect that if he had remembered to put the ridge vent in, the job would have taken an extra day, and the final bill would have been slightly higher than it was. I didn't necessarily pay for something I didn't get. Too much. It's just that I didn't get what I had expected.

Part of me wanted to rant and rave and insist that they fix it how they had promised. But I decided that this time I just need to let the cookie crumble how it will. There are a lot worse things in life, and I am very lucky that I even get to have this shed. And no other company was even willing to do the job. These people are very nice. I don't want to be mad at them. Although in the future, I think I will look for builders who are a little younger. And get a written contract. But my shed wouldn't exist if I hadn't done it this way. I am still very grateful.

Good points...was more of a rant than anything, easy to do from across the net.
I thought the existing gable vent was on the back....had a hard time sorting thru all the pics.
The 'foyer' partition goes all the way to roof?

On most.....ok all...of my projects "X" was just a pipe dream and I can't even see "Y" from where I ended up so I think you did well @Finnie!

I don't see why the gable vents wouldn't be just fine perhaps even better. I'd definitely do so nice sized ones. Are they going to build them or will they be ready made vents?

Yup, the partition goes all the way up. The idea was to keep the chicken dust on the chicken side. But if there has to be a vent, then there goes that. But it ought to be minimal dust that reaches up that high.

That's a good question. I'll ask them. I was waiting to see what you and aart said about vent size, and then I was going to write to them and tell them how big I want them. They may already have something in mind.

I didn't know making the vents themselves was an option.

I had an octagonal shaped vent saved among the wood from off the house that I was going to have them install. But it wasn't in good shape. It was basically a square vent with 8 pieces of trim on the front to make the octagon. When it was on our house, it must have been installed behind the siding so only the octagon showed. Well most of those 8 trim pieces were loose or broken and it wasn't really worth refurbishing to put it on. Plus, at the time, the guy convinced me that with the ridge vent, gable vents were not needed.

Too bad I didn't just say, Well put it on anyway just for looks!
(That's pretty much why the rectangle reclaimed one went on the front.)
