I did say probably, Cetawin, but after seeing the pictures..

Is your dog a GS? They're pretty powerful. I don't see how barbed wire or many of the common types of fencing could do that.

At this point the only thing I can suggest is to search your property for anything out of the ordinary.

The weather was bad, so we werent able to stay out for very long.
She never made any noise, so she didnt help us find her.
She is a mix breed.

She said she called for Hope for two days, not necessarily walked through woods etc. looking for the dog.
Just wanted to remind you of that, dog could have been in the area still. Not that it outrules dog-napping..

Only thing hunters and trappers are always getting a bad rap.

The way this thread started out everyone was blaming someone for setting a trap on their land. No proof it was even a trap or snare, just a guess from a vet.

Really sorry for hope, just alot of things could do that.

Great members on this forum, but sometime we dont have all the facts before we post. Yes I have done that many times myself.

I wouldn't say hunters and trappers, deerman, I'd say poachers and trespassers. There's nothing wrong with legal wildlife conservation, it's those who do it illegally that cause problems. And, if it WAS a trap or snare, it would be the latter category that gets smack-talked LOL.....

Honestly, even being a hunter myself my first assumption upon seeing a wound like that would be to think trap or snare. I'm not posting this to fuel an argument or anything, only to make a point....No one's blaming law abiding hunters/trappers (I'm sure you already know that, just reiterating)

Be sure to keep us updated on what happens with the conservation agent! And especially what happens with Hope....

ETA: I'm not casting my lot in with it being a trap/snare, just talking about it in the event that it ends up being the culprit. It may have just as well been something else....who knows???

Like cjeanean said, theres a difference between hunters/ trappers and poachers/trespassers.
Not everyone who hunts or traps does it legaly, so yes they are the ones who give legal hunters a bad name. Just becouse a certain type of snare or trap is illegal, donesnt mean someone doesnt use it. if everyone hunted and trap like they were suppose to, conservation offiers would have a pretty easy job.
Since this is such a rural area, the vet is used to seeing animals caught in traps. The traps and snares dont always work the way they are suppose to, so yes it looks high on the leg, but that doesnt mean it couldnt be a snare. The vet told me he has seen a cat cut in half by a snare.

i don't believe a snare or a trap did it after seeing the pics. a snare would rub majority on front and back not the sides. if it was from a snare u would see lines or groves that look like rope from the aircraft cable which is also known as wire rope, the wound is also to high i agree. it does not leave a smooth brush burn look or as straight of a line as the pics look to show.

it is to high for a foot hold trap also if a foot hold is set properly and adjusted properly it will only catch the pads of the foot on a non targeted dog or cat not higher. if set improperly it might catch toes or inch or 2 above ankle there is no way it would hit above the knee joint where her injury is located. i have caught quite a few stray cats in foot holds and seen others have dogs caught i theirs and not once was the dog or cat hurt they have all been released unharmed. i have never seen anything close to that on our traplines or any other's lines we have been on with others.

a foot hold trap with teeth those r illegal in all 50 states and highly collectable. it is a federal law if broke and somewhere probably around a $10,000 fine i don't think someone is stupid enough to risk that one. they r worth min $300++ a piece aint no way anyone is gonna put a trap worth that out let alone in someone else's yard, it would be hung on a wall, hidden away or sold. i've seen some sell on ebay at end of auction go between $2-3,000 a piece.

to be honest from what i see of the pics the hole looks like it came from continous rubbing of something or she got caught and tore it trying to free herself or her twisting trying to free herself cut it on what was stuck against her leg it doesn't look like a puncture wound. closest thing i can think of that it reminds me of is getting hurt on metal, scrap laying around or like she caught her leg between a wall and something metal and pulled out or got stuck between 2 pieces of metal somehow? mabe even stuck somewhere and got hung up on a nail which cut going past it? is their anyway she could get hurt on the hog pannels or like between a stall and a metal bar like a horse stall or something???

I got the cone collar from the vet.

If it wasnt a puncture wound, then why is there a hole clean through her leg?

Snares can catch animals any where, whether it be the head, foot,ankle,abdomen,etc.100's of non-target animals are caught in legal traps every year, and its the same with illegal traps.
