My poor Kitty :( What could have done this? *GRAPHIC PICS*

I'm sorry about your kitty's booboo's and hope he's on the road to a complete and speedy recovery. I agree with a few others here, a bird of prey, they certainly look like talon wounds. Have come across a few bunnies with very similar wounds. Luckily, cats are awsome healers, I had a cat who used his and several other cats' 9 lives before he died. He was shot in the head with a pellet gun near his year, didn't penetrate his hard skull but i had to squeeze and drain the wound several times a day while he healed, he came home one day with a crazy blow dart hanging out of his side (stupid neighborhood kids), he sliced his entire forearm from armpit to paw resulting in nearly 150 stitches. Each and every time, he was down for the first few days but when he started to feel better, he'd want out. He died New Years morning this year, of what we suspect a heart attack while chasing a mouse! The old boy was almost 13 and weighed 24lbs with the head the size of a softball. My advice is to keep him as quit and calm as possible for a few days, keep him on the antibiotics and keep the wounds clean as puncture wounds can harbor germs more than gashes. Also, if you had the cat declawed, he really has no business being outside. He can not effectively defend himself against any sort of attack. It takes their best weapon against preditors. You are going to have a horrible fight on your hands to retrain him to stay inside. I would say, let this also act as a lesson and example as to why you never EVER EVER EVER EVER declaw a cat.

Poor kitty! He looks pretty good other than being a bit beat up.

Kitties are awesome healers. My favorite barn cat came dragging himself up the driveway last summer, just howling and yowling. He had a broken back leg and there was a 3 inch V of skin that had been torn away, plus he had a serious bite mark on his chest.

Luckily, our vet had just opened, and it was a surgery day, so they took us right in. He ended up with 21 staples, and a splinted back leg. Cost just over $400, but included a neuter. Brought him home and confined him to an unused coop to heal. (The hubby & my daughter are deathly allergic to cats, bringing him inside was not an option.

) It took about 3 months, and a good bit of TLC, but he finally healed up. He walks with a bit of a limp, and hangs around the yard more, but he does okay. You can't even tell he lost a huge swath of skin.

Hope your boy heals up. I agree with the bird of prey attack idea. I thought talons when I first saw the pic.

Blessings-
Em

He does have opposing puncture wounds (2 more to be exact) under that leg where you see what looks like talon marks. He is doing fine today, fighting that cone again and running around the house like a maniac which is his normal behavior. the way the puncture wounds are located on his left leg under and above still looks to me like a large dog bite, like the dog came up from behind sam and chomped down on the left rear quarters. I could be wrong but the pics I posted don't really do any justice to the actual injury when your looking at it. the torn wound under and at the back of his leg has another puncture wound next to it.

We were out talking to the neighbors last night and someone heard a cat screaming at about 4 am, they went outside to see what was going on and saw the cat run one direction and the mastiff run after him, apparently it went down in their back yard. They can't say for sure that it was sam but know it was a cat.

We have been cleaning his wound about 6 times a day, today being the second day, he gets Orbax (antibiotic) once a day and a shot of morphine every 12 hours, you would think that morphine would take the wind out of his sails but he is still fired up. The gaping wound at the back of his leg is looking good so far, I just wonder if it would be ok to put triple antibiotic ointment on it just to keep it moist? I am afraid once it starts scabbing up that its gonna keep tearing open everytime he walks. SO far he is taking it like a trooper. Thank you all for your help on trying to figure out what did this, I am gonna have to keep an eye on that mastiff! If he comes into my yard causing trouble there will be hell to pay!

Sorry about your cat, I would think dog just seems like the dog clamped on to that one side and shook like dogs do, the dog more then likely released the cat to get another bite and the cat ran. I have seen this with our dogs when they play with their toys.
I had a cat that had a huge hole in his neck I could see all the way down his neck Everyone told me he would die well I pealed the scab off (you could smell the infection under it) I only found the wound because of how he was laying and when he got up to get a treat. So I cleaned it out really good and used bag balm (old red tin) my grandmothers favorite med for animals I kept the wound opened and cleaned for about 2 weeks and it healed fine he just had a very small scar he would not be kept inside he had to be out side so that is where he was found out when I went to move he had adopted an older neighbor and was living there also I let the neighbor have him since we were moving into town he lived to be very old. Just keep the wounds clean and dry and he will heal. Good luck.

The open wound on the back you want to heal from the inside out to avoid abcess. I would just flush it a couple times daily with an antibacterial flush/and Hydrogen peroxide.

I'm not going to weigh in so much on what did get him, but it was NOT a cat fight. Usually you don't see much until the wounds abcess.

My thoughts exactly!

I am cleaning the wound with a solution the vet gave me to mix up here, its blue, some sort of antimicrobal(sp) I forget what they called it. He had a rabies shot, shot of baytril, and morphine at the vet. They told me not to put anything else on it so thats what I have been doing, about 6 times a day. The back of his leg is oozy and a tinge green which is concerning to me. I think I will be calling the vet about that in the morning seeing as they are closed for the day now. He is acting like his wild self already tho so he must be feeling pretty darn good, just wish he wasn't running and jumping as much as he has been but how do you stop that without putting him in a kennel. He would have a fit if I did that. For now things are good. I got very lucky to have caught this right away and got him to the vet almost immediately so the wounds didn't have time to get abcesed. I have never been that lucky in the past and wounds on the crazy coon killin cat ended up getting infected. I am very cautious now and it's routine to check the cats nightly for ticks thins time of year anyways so I kinda check for wounds when I do that as well.

I had a cat who I watched get attacked by a fox, he lived, but the bite marks on his shoulder were creepily just like those.
My guess is fox.

I hope they sent you home with antibiotics to administer every 12 hours too.
