It can be tricky, if you can get them to lay before the short days, then they tend to lay all through the winter, that is the reason a lot of people want some pullets in the flock...but if they DON't start before the short days, then they wait with the layers to start in the spring.
For some reason, our flock of 8 didn't follow that rule - they all started at various age before and throughout the winter, from late Oct to mid Feb. As you can see, two started right around winter solstice!!
Now they are all 18 months, again started molting at different schedule (from Oct and still going.) Each takes different length of time to complete molting. They all conduct their own schedule and programs!!
