I mixed a little wood ash and saw dust in it, too. But I think they would enjoy plain play sand all the same. Just make sure it's play sand, because it's fine, clean and screened.
They did great overnight. They pretty much stayed under the light. Every once in a while they ventured out, but either it was too cold or too dark. So they went back inside. Once the sun came up, they were all out enjoying themselves.
Overall inside 6ft x 2ft and 18" high. The height might be too much, but if they flush up, I can always lower it with a cloth or something. We will see... The closed part is a 1.5ft by 2ft and the screened part is 4.5ftx2ft. 1/2" vinyl coated wire on the bottom all the way.
Pretty sure that is 1/2" vinyl coated wire. 1/4" wouldn't let the poo pass through...
16 birds in only one cage (12 square ft). I plan to have more quail, so there is a second level.

Haha. As long as they are happy and get along, it's fine. But my guess is that soon they will start fighting, because they can't get away from each other. I found this information by the Texas A&M University System:I have 80 in 8 square feet right now....
