My quail experience: we just got hatching eggs!

I would wait to name them, out of the 20 day old chicks I brought I’m down to 18 now . After my males grow a bit I’ll have 13 that I’m keeping. All the colored quail I want have a 4 week delay smh

I watched some videos on correcting the chick with the curled toes. He wobbled out to eat, so after he ate and drank I scooped him out and I gently flattened his toes onto a tiny quail foot size piece of cardboard, and I secured the foot with painters tape. He’s floppin that big boot around and walking on it, so I hope it fixes it enough so he can at least walk on the bottom of the foot and not the side, I suspect it will always be pointed inward a little wonky tho.

So far there’s one who looks like maybe tuxedo, one that’s very yellow underneath(Big Bird) a very red looking one (Red), some that are pretty stripey, and some that seem more spotty. It’s amazing to see all the differences! We are trying to give out gender neutral names, so we don’t have weird mismatches, like huh why is Princess crowing?

What I've done with some, is given them silly nicknames (like cinnamon chick for a cinnamon, big chick for the biggest, long chick for the one with a long body, stunt chick for the one who does the best stunts, thing 1 and thing 2 for the two that look like twins...) This helps me tell apart all the chicks based on their appearance/birdonality. Once I can tell their genders I give them their official names. Some of them I've just named as chicks though (like Pinga, my tame king quail and profile pic). This probably sounds silly, but it works for me.

All done, total is 20, but the shrink wrap chick is way smaller than the others, so I’d say he has maybe a 60% chance, he’s much stronger than I expected tho.

so from my eBay, lost in the mail hatching eggs, 21 of 36 hatched, 1 of them was shrink wrapped, 2 with curled toes that are now usable, 2 more died while shrink wrapped, one died after about 12 hours, suddenly. So 23 hatchable eggs, and I had ordered 24 and received 36, not too bad :)

Congrats on your babies :jumpy
Thank you!

today I can’t tell the shrink wrap chick from the others, so he’s doing great, whichever he is.

I moved them all to a larger brooder (up to 110 quart bin from 66 quarts) and added wood chips instead of paper towels, it was ridiculous how often I had to change out the paper towels, hopefully the wood chips will keep it to once a day for a while, and I have a larger bin for when they’re bigger.

None of mine moved or wiggled at all until day 18. They all started moving and getting pips at the same time more or less.
