I have two Red Stars that are about a year old now. They are great girls and are out free ranging in the yard on most days. They usually both roost together at night on their perch which is about 25-39 inches long, but this week one girl has started sleeping in the nesting box and so there is poop in the hay too. I have also notice some feathers in the bottom of the coop. They both seem to get along well and I have never noticed any bullying between the two. Any thoughts?

They could be molting. When my Welsummer starts her molt, she retreats to the nesting box at night. Once her molt is almost over, she returned to the roost. Speaking of which, she is having a really hard molt right now and slept in the nesting box last night.

Thanks, she is losing feathers around her neck right now. My other girl shows no signs of feather loss. I hope you are right, she is making quite a mess in the box, and then laying her eggs in there. Yuk!
