Chicken lady,
I've seen Delawares and I do think they are beautiful birds! Yes, I'm from southwestern Virginia in the mountains.
I love raising chicks too with all the assorted colors even though some of them are mutts. Our little Banty has been such a good mama. She made her babies go up on the roost with her at 7 weeks. The brown patterned chick was on the ground and couldn't figure out how to get up and was chirping. She just wanted to snuggle with the others as usual, but the Banty Mama thought they were too old for that. I put her up on the roost which is about a foot high and she kept trying to put her head under her sister's wing to get warm She finally fell off and knocked her sister off the roost too. I put her back again. My husband checked her late that night and had to put her back up. He was afraid she'd freeze on the floor by herself. Somehow she stayed up on the roost all night after that.
