They probaby can be scared to death but I have them fenced in with a 6 ft. fence. The only thing that got in was sparrows in the pen.

it sounds like it was sudden at least. perhaps his heart or something along those lines. sometimes animals have problems we can't see and that don't show up symptomatically. he could have had some type of physical defect that was going to take him down no matter what you did.
i'm so sorry for your loss.
