I need help!! My sister & I have a 501c3 non profit animal rescue & about 6 weeks ago, I rescued a rooster. I've read all I can read online to learn as I knew nothing about them. He had his first visit to the avian doctor a couple days ago & he got a clean bill of health. The vet said he was very well taken care of & very sweet & laid back. So I was at the store a bit ago, saw a bag of parrot food that looked really good & thought I'd get it just for treats. I looked online while in the store to see if roosters can eat parrot food, it said yes, if it's safe for a parrot it's safe for a chicken. So I bought a bag. HOWEVER, as he was gobbling it down, I noticed some little white round balls, I looked at the ingredients, all sounded good except the NAVY BEANS. I've read that even 3 or 4 will kill your chicken & there is NOTHING that can be done for them once ingested, said they'll die within an hours. Is this true?? Have any of you had this happen? I'm panicking, I'm sooo attached to him already. Please let me know. Thanks.

So..let’s use deductive reasoning here. Parrots are birds. Chickens are birds. Dried beans are also toxic to parrots. Parrot food on the current market would not have toxins in it.
I suspect they treated the beans in some way. If you cook the beans it takes the toxin out of it.

*Also, don’t want to underline too much in your hour if need, but best to stick to chicken food and food formulated just for chickens. If you want to feed treats, kale, and lettuce are best, in moderation. High vitamins, no calories. No chard, collard, Brussels sprouts or spinach, these are bad for them.*

Really? Chard, collard, etc is bad for them? Why's that? I thought most greens were ok.

How long ago did you feed the parrot food to your rooster?

And I agree with Kathy... You should feed a commercially made complete poultry food to the bird.
No treats...treats take away from a balanced diet which can cause problems.

That's a new one to me. I grow a lot of collards in my yard and my chickens have been eating them for a couple of years now. No ill effects, at least that I have seen. @Kathy Golla what is your source for that?

I recently discovered chickens like figs. Also you can give ripe tomatoes(as long as you know they weren't sprayed with anything)
I wish I had extra figs to give my hens! Be careful, in moderation, they are very high in sugar.
Tomatoes are fine, but again in moderation. Like cucumbers, pumpkin and watermelon, they have a high water content and cause diarrhea.
