My rooster has started biting me if he is not in the mood to be...

Yep. Follow rooster-red's advice and other advice you'll find here on the forum for dealing with a roo that is challenging you for the top spot in the pecking order. Get it done early and you'll have a good chance of changing the behavior.

I had one that ran and hit me as I stepped off the porch. No hens around, no reason to do that. Mr Browning took care of him in quick order. The other started stalking me, the DH took care of him.

Another rooster hit my legs, I got a good kick in on him and then accidently stepped on his head. He stays out of my way now. After I thought about it, I really think the hit was an accident on his part, I believe he was chasing a hen.

I guess I didn't help much with your problem.

Mine bit me and I bit him back, on the neck - the same way he does to the hens when he's , well, you know. I did it just hard enough for him to get the point, then carried him around for 10 minutes or so petting him and giving him little hugs.
Every day I pick him up and hug him, he pretends to hate it, growling and squirming, but he doesn't bite anymore and runs to greet me when I approach, even looks disappointed if I just walk on by.......

I did give him a good spank both times he did it. I didn't even know roosters could growl. I've never known a rooster, so I'm still learning their langauge. The other night when he was getting ticked off at me tring to pick him up, he sounded like he was hissing. I quickly learned that thats what it was  He didn't get any oatmeal or pets from me that night! Mabye he is smart enough to realize that, and will be nicer from now on

I don't pick up my rooster, or cuddle with him, but most of the time he is a very good rooster. He does a good job and is not rough with the girls. He does, however, want to protect them if I have to pick one up for any purpose. He will come running and dance a little jig in a threatening posture. Not out of meanness, you understand, but I still don't let him do this.

The first time, he pecked me when I reached up beside him to remove a gal from the roost. I cuffed him lightly but firmly around the head. The next time I reached for a hen, he turned his head to the opposite side and tucked it under his wing! Smart boy!

The second time, I was removing a broody from the nest and she was making a racket something fierce! He came running into the coop and started doing his little dance towards me. I picked up a stick I keep handy and lit his little butt up! He was hopping around trying to get away and out the door! Now, if I have an episode like this and he comes running, I just turn towards him, face him down and say, "You sure you want to do that?" He just politely leaves the coop and mouths off a lot.....outside!

Gotta show 'em whose boss and the smart ones will learn. If they aren't smart enough to learn, do you want that bloodline bred back into your flock?
