Just anecdotal from other people. But really, it makes sense to me. I imagine they give up with enough failed attempts to crow, much like a dog who wears a bark collar quits barking with the collar on- often without batteries in. They've learned it's not going to work (or in the dogs case, gonna hurt) so they just stop.
