My rooster hurt one of his hens...

Our rooster is a Welsummer, about a year old. Our five hens (three Welsummers and two Buff Orpingtons) are 2 years old. So it sounds like hormones, balance, and I should separate HIM from the hens. The hens run around fine together, we'll leave him in the chicken coop, and the hens can run around the acre fenced in compound on our 40 acres, like they all usually do. The can share the chicken house at night. He won't do anything then, will he?
Thanks for the advice, guys, I do appreciate it so much!!!

How much did he bloody her head?

Was it like an attack or was it from holding on with the beak and he pulled the comb/head feathers? A comb can have a very small nick, but bleed a lot.

A year old rooster is still hormonal this time of year, but should be calming down. Some can be aggressive, but chicken mating can be a bit brutal to look at to begin with.

If you have 40acres for them to range, then the hens should have room to avoid him. If he is attacking one specific hen, then check her out to make sure there is nothing wrong with her - roosters/hens will try to run off another that is sick.

You can try separation if you wish, where he can still see the girls. Separation may stress him and the girls, so take time to observe behaviors.

I think it was a nick that just bled a lot. He pulled off her head feathers trying to mount her. He's done this to a lesser degree to our other Buff. I've checked her out and she seems fine. She avoids him, but the other hens are fine with her. I see them taking dust baths together. We kept him in the chicken coop for a day, but they seem ok - the "picked on hen" can just stay up in the chicken house. When she does come out, she just stays far away from him. She's funny, she ran behind me and the dogs for protection when "Brewster" saw her from a LONG way off and came running after her.
