My rooster is on very thin ice...suggestions requested please

Have any of you tried the grabbing your roo and firmly pressing him to the ground and holding him there until he stops struggling and then for a few moments longer. I have heard this works after a few times. If you really want to humiliate him, put him on his back and hold him there until he submits, this is what a dominate roo will do in the wild. I won my cockerel over with treats. He is first to come say hi when I walk outside.

I've had nasty roos who I had to fight with every time I went near the hens. So not worth keeping. I have 1 mixed breed roo now. He's 2 years old and still just as mellow as they come. I have 2 Buff orp roos, probably 6 months old, who are calm also. Hopefully they stay that way.

I'm actually beginning to experience the same problem with my roo. I hate to do something with him because he is a beautiful lavender orpington, but I will not tolerate his behavior, especially with my two young children in the yard. He started with the dog about 4 weeks ago, then turned on my husband, then my 3 yr old daughter. And I too would give him a boot, tell my daughter to kick him away, I even went as far as chasing around one day trying to catch him so I could confine him to the coop while the hens free ranged. Well I never got a hold of him, he ended up running into the woods far enough where I thought he had gotten lost, but returned later that day. With all the rain we've been having they've been in their coop for the past couple of days. Let them out today finally and he puffed up and attempted to go after my daughter again. I'm really thinking of getting rid of him, my husband would love to cook him I'm sure. I wouldn't have it in me to cull him myself so maybe I can find someone in my area to do it for me. My problem is catching him! Ohhh where to begin with that!

We had a nasty roo who didn't attack us, but always picked fights with our favorite roo, and behaved most ungentlemanlikely towards the hens - he'd grab them by the neck while they ate and tried to mount them despite their loud clucks of protest; the nice roo, on the other hand, used to offer them food and do this little roo dance around them to charm them.

We found someone who wanted a roo and gave the nasty one away for free. Never regretted it.

fish catcher net works wonders. use it to catch before lettng out to free range. There are to many roo's to put up with a mean one. after you ctch him, either kill for supper or for dog food. My doberman loves fresh cooked chicen for supper.

Oh and just thought to add that it really seems genetics play a role in the roo's character, and you don't want aggressiveness genes passed on, not only to roosters but perhaps to hens of the next generation as well! Currently we have two roosters who are offspring of Nice Boy, and while they are big and can take care of themselves, and generally don't like being handled, they've NEVER tried to peck us (although they are very good at pilfering people's toast if you happen to walk out with a snack in hand!).

But on the other hand, our gentlest, softest-spirited mixed silkie roo flew out at me like a bird of prey when I tried to lock up one of his girlfriends. I suppose that was the protector in him, so I didn't take off any behavior points for that. Once he was assured no one is going to hurt his lady, he calmed down.

i had a very very aggressive cream legbar that i didnt want in the pot

this is what i did

i put him alone in a small coop confined in the dark

this was like that for a 2 month letting him out every 2 weeks to see how he was

after 2 months i let him out and he was at the bottom of the pecking order

no more aggression and not even crowing


he has been integrated with the others now for 3 weeks and is still at the bottom and only crows on occasion

he even runs from me before he would attack me

I had a Black Jersey Giant rooster who is a *****HOLE..
He changed to MEAN rooster, guess who ruined his friendly side... FOX!
The fox chased him and his hens around my house, i had to go out and chased the fox away.
now.. he's MEANEST rooster ever, i gave him away to new home 1 week ago.
I got new Nankin rooster, he's sweet guy!
What i did to jersey giant rooster to stay from me is spray water hose at him until he stop coming to me. its worked!
Kick or anything wont help my rooster, he will think im another rooster and will fight me harder.
its was hurt as hell.

There are a lot of friendly roos that people must rid of d/t no roo allowed or numbers issues. One attack forgive second no what is that old saying about fool me once?

I got a sneaky Buff Orphington rooster that will creep up on you when I'm not looking. The rascal has never hurt anyone but I watch him close. I keep him becouse he's gentle with the hens during mating and I think he'll produce nice chicks when the time comes. There may come a day when he'll have to go. Until then....the fourteen hens seem to keep him buisy.
