My rooster scares me to death!

Um, I'm confused......the eggs are already fertile if you have a roo with your hens so it makes no difference when and how often you gather them, and if you have no intention of hatching them you don't even need a rooster.

I understand your point. The rooster came with the 12 hens. One of our tenants (living in a cabin in the country) was moving to the city. She couldn't take the hens and rooster with her...so we ended up with them. I'm such an animal lover that I couldn't bare to eat Mr. Rooster.

It is sad when you find out that the rooster you have fed and nourished decides to attack. I have been there. I culled my rooster, it was hard I loved him but my grand son is much more important to me. There are plenty of well behaved roosters out there please don't let a mean one rule your roost. Raising chickens is also about being responsible, could you imagine if you allowed this rooster to breed? Best of luck.

I'm not familiar with the term, "culled". BTW...I don't have any kids running around where the chickens and rooster are. My kids are grown.

I guess if children are not an issue and you don't mind his sneak attacks keep him. I was just putting in my 2 cents I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. Everyone is different in their expectations of pets. Good luck :/

No feathers ruffled here. I'm sorry if I came on strong. The "Good Post" icon was for you, not me.

We had a very aggressive rooster. I say had, because he is very docile now.

I was getting attacked every time I entered our chicken enclosure. The enclosure is 30 X 30 fenced with a top enclosed with game bird netting. I was seriously thinking about getting rid of him.

After some internet research I decided to try rehabilitating him. I found a limber tree sapling about 3 feet long. It was about as big around as a pencil but very flexible. Each time I entered the enclosure I would take it with me. When charged me I would smack him across the back with it. Wasn't stiff enough to seriously injure him, but substantial enough to hurt. Took about 5 or 6 events like this and he stopped the aggressive behavior. Now he just keeps his distance from me and the rest of the family.

The cool part is he will still charge everything else. Dogs, squirrels, people he does not know.
