My rooster was exposed to a windy 30 degrees and seems sick; is there anything I can do for him?

poor guy, do you have access to a feed store or TSC to buy some chicken antibiotics?

and putting it in his water is perfect
What I have was originally intended for fish... but I'm familiar with the capsules because the vet gave it to me like this for cats once. I gave him a dose of amoxicillin very late last night / early this morning and he dramatically improved a couple of hours ago. He clucked at me with vocals and he couldn't do that this morning.

I wasn't 100% sure of dosage, but he weighs as much as the cat did so I gave him a cat size dose. I put the powder on strawberries. He approved. He liked it so much I gave him more strawberries every time I checked on him. He now expects strawberries every time I check on him. I'm taking that as a good sign. 😆😅

How quickly do these respiratory problems usually progress? Could he have already had problems before yesterday and I didn't notice? I usually try to check everyone out at least once a week to make sure no one has any kinds of problems, but maybe I overlooked it? I checked the rest of the flock today just in case, and there seems to be no wheezing, coughing, sneezing, hoarsness, or anything that would indicate a problem for anyone else.

Hopefully, he will be doing better in the morning. Amoxicillin is usually not used for the bacterial respiratory diseases. There are viral and fungal diseases and they don’t respond to antibiotics. It could be that he was just having something temporary, and he is getting over it.
I hope so too. 🙂

What is normally used for chickens for viral and fungal diseases? What I have on hand are antibiotics and meds used in cats. (Amoxicillin, cephalexin, and baytril are the ones I was given for cats. I've cared for a feral cat population for over 13 years, and the vet was nice enough to give me some meds to keep on hand for emergencies.) Wondering if maybe I can find the right stuff for chickens so if something happens again, I'll be prepared... 😊

ah fish amox right? i used it for my chickens to. lol I love that! I believe the dose is like half a pill 2x a day, but it depend on the dose you have. Its a broad spectrum antibiotic so it will help.

you better be giving him more strabbs jk lol

Yes, that's the stuff. XD Used either this or the cephalexin for my hen, Helga, last year. Bad snakebite. She's happy and healthy now!

Mine is 500mg per capsule. Hopefully I have the amount right.

Definitely. And blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. 🤣 Also gave him a small bit of cornbread. He's so spoiled. 😆

thats good to hear! lol a happy spoiled boy! does the mox seem to be helping?

Baytril is one that can be used for certain bacterial respiratory diseases, but Tylan or Tylosin are more commonly used and approved for chickens. Amoxicillin does not treat mycoplasma, although it is fine to use for wound care and reproductive infections. Tylan injectable, which can be given orally to chickens is sometimes available in feed stores, and Tylosin powder for the water is found online from Jedds.com.

I'm not sure; he is 100% better now, but I'm not sure if the mox was the reason for it. A few weeks after Wild Thang went through this and got better, I now have another rooster (Baelfire) doing the same thing. Baelfire and Wild Thang have separate runs and no contact, so he couldn't catch anything from his dad. Yesterday, a few hens started doing it. I'm not sure what's going on unless it's not a respiratory thing and it's actually those buffalo gnats coming out early... I'm thinking about going ahead and spraying Pemethrin and vanilla everywhere just in case.

Thank you! I may go ahead and get some of those so I'll have them on hand.

Here is a video of GoldieFeathers the Second so you all can see what's going on. Usually she sneezes and she sounds normal but now she sounds like this. There is nothing unusual about the eyes, and that avian flu isn't in Arkansas yet (that I know of), so is it safe to assume that this is caused by the gnats? And if so... would Benadryl help any if there is swelling in the nostril or windpipe?

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/elanco-tylan-200-injection-250-ml Is this it? And is there a way to get it in chicken doses, because I have 15 chickens, I don't need enough for a herd of cattle. 😅
