We have a pet rooster, Ezekiel. The day before yesterday, I checked on him in the morning before leaving for work and he was fine. I came home to find him missing both spurs and bleeding everywhere, but otherwise OK. It's winter and cold and he is in the garage (he has a coop in there). He was not attacked and it doesn't appear that they got caught on anything... I'm baffled. Is it possible he picked them off himself? They were starting to get a bit long and I was planning to remove them, but they weren't so long that they were curling or looked bad. He's also pretty tame so he wasn't hurting anyone with them either. Has anyone else heard of a rooster removing his own spurs??

Hi @Dourily :frow Welcome To BYC

Do you have any photos?
Are there any other roosters around?
What breed is Ezekiel?

Photos of his housing - where he is kept when you are not home?

The only thing I can think of that might be plausible is he was fighting through fencing - sometimes this will cause roosters to have spur/leg and toe damage. Does he have any other injuries (like to the face/comb/wattles)?

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry for your boys injury. A rooster would NOT do that to himself.

How long have you had him and how old is he? How many other birds in your flock? Where was he when you found him? Does he have outdoor access or any friends? Did you find the missing spurs?

Sounds like a fight to me, though I've never YET heard of a rooster's spurs becoming detached. They would have to be hung into something pretty hard. Maybe you had a predator visit who left with some souvenirs?

Anybody in your family get flogged one too many times?

This is indeed an interesting mystery. :pop

They should be lying around somewhere. That might give a clue as to what happened.
That's what I would think... with the exception that once my dog found a cats nest and came back with the claws still stuck in the fur. I know cats have sheaths that come off anyways. But just mentioning as a comparison. I don't know anything about spurs.
