Hi I am new to chicken keeping. I currently have 6 chickens and one of them I was sure is a roster. But he had been recently squatting when I walk by. I did look it up. And it said that this is the mating position for hens. So can a roster do this. He is almost 4 month and hasn’t started Crowing none of the other hens have done this.

Hmmmm...That is weird… That definitely looks like a rooster, and for months even is a little early for a hen to start squatting, it can happen especially in high egg production breeds that mature early such as ISA browns.... I have no idea…

Edit: I looked at a couple old threads on this same situation, it almost always turned out to be a hen. Can you please show me a picture of the tail? It could just be a female with extra an large comb and waddles

Edit 2: The comb and waddles look EXACTLY like a roo's....perhaps it’s just a nervous roo? Time will tell, I suppose.

4 months if squatting should be laying soon. Guess we will see. Have had plenty of females with large combs and wattles. Looks like many of the hens I have had. Especially these faster maturing ones. Roos are generally slower to feather. Had some almost bald. Weirdos 😂

If you do have a hen you’ll see within a week or two. My little hen ebony started squatting about a week ago and she just laid her first egg yesterday!

(I keep mentioning this everywhere but I am so excited because it is my first ever from my own chicken!)
