Ahh, Barnyard, the dog show addiction. I am warning you, stay farrrrr away. LOL It is more addictive then Crack and will cost you more money. haha

It takes a little instruction and finesse to show a dog, but it is a learnable skill for most people. Some breeds are easier to owner handle than others.

Step one is to find a good breeder who will help you along, and mentor you, and also find you some good people in your local area to help you.

Rottie are the cutest puppies ever. I fostered a rottie from my old work last year, what a sweet heart. I wish I could have kept her.

Does your dog need to have papers to be shown? Mine is from an animal rescue and he is purebred...his markings, mannerisms, and his lines are just perfect.

Yes, a dog needs to have registration, but there are different ways to do that.

To compete in the AKC Breed ring for Championship points and the eventual CH title, the dog must be purebred, intact, parents must have been registered, the litter must have been registered, and the individual dog must have been registered.

However, if your dog appears to be purebred, and it is sexually neutered, you can get what is called an "ILP" (Indefinite Listing Privilege) number. You can find out how to do this at the AKC's website. http://www.akc.org. Search for ILP number.

Once you have this document, you can train and show your dog in any performance event offered by the AKC, or the UKC. This would include Rally-O obedience, regular Obedience, Agility, Herding, or Tracking to name a few.

some of the Rotts Ive seen in dog shows twenty years ago were a little different than todays. The new lines are a little softer, not hard lined and questionable expression. Your dog has the better trait than the old Rotts, softer in lines top and bottom in profile, large chest and barrel, straight legs in block form, wide stance and the expression is sweet and soft. A very good stop on the face as well! Well balanced all around, not high in rump because some of the old ones, they were a little rounder in hind ends that I was afraid if breeders go that route, they would have the bulldogish type like in QHs.

As for UKC, any breeds of dogs can be shown, including mutts. I have a friend's daughter who showed her Newfie in the last couple of years and the dog was not papered, he came from the pound.

She is a very nice girl, and has produced very well for me in her first litter.

She has her faults, and expression is one of them. Her eye is too large and too round, which does give her a softer expression.

Her son that I kept has a more correct eye and expression.

Many people keep "show dogs" pig fat and not in proper condition. I can't stand fat or out of condition dogs. My dogs are in hard ripped condition, with no extra fat. It doesn't seem to keep us from the winner's circle either.

I wish for better turn of stifle and shoulder angulations, esp that of the upper arm in her children. The litter I have planed for October should give me some of those pieces to continue with, and EGAD I hope I get girls. The first litter was only 2 girls and SEVEN boys, so I ended up with a boy.

There are pictures of him back up further in this thread, Milton.

Red, this is Otto. He will be 3 months old tomorrow. He is 26 pounds. Do you think he looks purebred? I know you can't really see much personality yet from a static picture but does he have the looks or bearing for a show dog? Are they very restricted on weight? His mom and dad evidently were monsters!!!
