My Salmon Faverolles Pullet is Black - Help Me Understand the Genetics

I don't think it is something genetic that popped up or a cross. Just another example on what happens when a hatchery doesn't do the agressive culling required to keep the neat color of a salmon Favorelles hen. This variety is high maintenance, it requires a large amount of dedication. I had some black spots in the beards and breast feathers of my hatchery Favorelles hens and heard it was common with hatchery birds.
This bird is probably an extreme example of this.

Whoa....just came across this:

This is the MAIN and only picture this breeder has to advertise their Faverolles!! In the summary, they list the varieties as follows:

APA Recognized Color Varieties:
  • Salmon Faverolles

  • White Faverolles

Non-Recognized Color Varieties:

  • Black Faverolles

  • Buff Faverolles

  • Cuckoo Faverolles

  • Ermine Faverolles

  • Laced Blue Faverolles

Of these listed, I'm not sure which variety their girl or Vera fit into though, haha! Cuckoo maybe?? I sent them an email asking if they could tell us more about this "variety". Hopefully they'll get back to me!

Well she's a salmon, but a poorly marked one. I'd almost call her a mahogany, but that it is the name for spangled Russian Orloffs without the mottling.

I'm now wondering if my girl, from some eggs I was given by a neighbour, is 'good' - she looks lovely to me but I know it is just from a backyard keeper. On the plus side we are in France so maybe the gene pool is good. I so wouldn't complain about your girl in my flock though!

Loving all the thoughts / info on the genetics!
Yours is probably fantastic...you've got direct lines there I bet! Do you have a picture to share? (It's possible you've shown me already but I have a terrible memory and I've seen so many pictures of Favs lately I can't remember which is which, haha! But I always love chickie pics!)

Whoa....just came across this...

I've run across that in the past as well, I took this to be someone who acquired off color Salmon Favs from Meyer or Ideal, but maybe didn't recognize that, and just created a page to sell them ... I think the listing of the various of varieties is just sort of cut and paste info from other sources, but not a list of what they offer.

I know I was thinking that too (surprise huh? ) ... I was thinking if that nice french lady starts showing us pretty poofy favs and then complains that they're "too french" or something ... well I don't what we're gonna do! ;)
Why do the French only need one laying hen?

Because one egg is un oeuf.

;)
