I just read thru this thread, too, and I'm so sorry for your loss.
I have the feeling that instead of this being eventually referred to as "silky syndrome," this will someday be referred to as "shipped rooster syndrome." There are a lot of people out there that just aren't chicken folk, think about it. I never minded the sound of my own roos, but I can remember a roo living next-door to me when I was just out of high school ... I felt like dressing and eating that thing every morning at 4:30am. It was like nails on a chalkboard. I'd guess some non-chicken folks might not appreciate the sound of a scared roo cock-a-doodle-dooing in a box while waiting to go off to it's next destination.
It seems too much of a coincidence that most of the complaints are about cockerels, and I'd think there's some correlation other than just sexual genetics. I literally WATCHED as my mailguy opened my porch door and dropped my mail inside ... the box marked "FRAGILE: HATCHING EGGS" was on the bottom. Is that really necessary?
Bottom line: people can be scummy. Bless you for trying so hard. If karma is real, you've got a lot of good coming your way.
