Loosing a chick always does seem to make the population spike... I lost my ONLY Blue Laced Red Wyandotte pullet. BLRW are the sweetest chickens I have ever had... and she was my favorite. I wanted to replace her, but the roomies said something like 'we can't order 25 more to replace ONE'. So anyway, I found 2 other people to split an order with (MPC doesn't carry BLRW) so I pared down my wish list.we were only legally allowed 8 more...I ordered 11 (and got a freebie!) ONLY because BLRW only come straight run. Besides, I wasn't the one who added the buff orps, and everyone agreed we needed the EEs. So we doubled our flock...and now all 3 of us have said we wish we had ordered more (not just because of adult losses) Even the kids are in on it. I talked everyone into letting me get JUST ONE Polish (I had to bring evidence as to why we should get one....they don't trust me not to just pick out neat looking chickens with poor egg-laying or bad temperments) and now the 6 year old wants to order more...so do I. Lightning is so adorable and so much fun...
But on the subject of cochins, I don't really like mine. Maybe he is atypical for the breed, I have nothing to compare him to. He was my free chick and he's a skittish whiner. The BLRW and BO are the friendly ones. And cuter, I think.
