I've been raising a mixed flock of silkies for a couple of years now, and I started with a real mishmash of various unrelated stock. I even bought some of my early stock from livestock auctions. Over time, I just kept strictly culling anything I didn't like, and keeping what I thought was the best. These pictures are some of my young pullets that I hatched out around Christmas. My 12 year old son wants to start showing his Silkies this summer, and I think we're getting close to decent birds now. They all have correct toes, and no visible disqualifications that I can see. Let us know what you think. We can take it, lol.

You culled ones you didn't like? Sorry to say anything but couldn't you have found homes for some of them, the animal shelters also take chickens. Im sorry but just because you "didn't like it" you killed it isn't that like chicken racism? Im sure you could of found homes for them on BYC their is always people looking for silkies. Again sorry for this whole rant I just had to show what I thought.

Since when does the term "cull" automatically mean kill? To "cull" means to selectively REMOVE certain individuals that don't conform to the standard that you are trying to achieve. Most of my culls were either sold or given away as pets.

Emzyyy, culling does not necessarily mean the birds were killed. It simply means the birds were removed from the breeding flock. Heck, I've culled hundreds of birds, and not one was killed, I found homes for all of them. A proper understanding of terminology is a great benefit when posting comments.

millebantam, they look pretty good to me! Mind you, I'm not a silkie expert by a long shot and there are people here who are far more qualified to comment. The one thing that may be of concern is it looks like they may have a few stiff tail feathers on some of the white.

Hi! Your white Silkies look great to me. Good luck to your son when he starts showing!
I've chosen to remove the word *cull* from my chicken-vocabulary --- it has so many negative connotations and is so misunderstood. I 'butcher extra roosters', I give away or sell hens that don't fit into a 'program' here, but I don't *cull*.
Semantics...
