My Small Coop Design

I just uploaded the design to the Sketchup 3D warehouse. The name is "Four Hen Coop". If you have Sketchup, you can now download and play with the design. There are other coop designs in the 3D warehouse that may also be of interest.

Allow minimum of 4 sq ft/bird. 4x4 wil only do healthy housing of 4 birds. Also, to max out floor space and reduce fighting, use a bump-out for the nest boxes. Easier for you and more space for them. A win-win. Do not neglect ventilation. Window on east side is better for egg production as they start their day a little earlier with the light coming in. South facing window good too for winter time warmth and light. North side windows not needed except in very warm climates.

As noted originally, this is a 4 to 6 hen design. Of course how many hens it houses does depend on the breed. Bantams would probably fit more than 4 birds easily. Other factors also influence, such as run size, and climate.

A "bump out" nest box is not easier to build or less expensive, and does lead to some problems with waterproofing unless done carefully.

Search online for Sketchup. It's a Google free application. Download Sketchup, then go to the 3D warehouse (there's a button on the Sketchup menu). You can load the design directly into your Sketchup from the 3D warehouse, and then modify it as you see fit. Best part is, with Google, it's all free!
