I also think the snood is for attracting females. There are many bird species where the males have fantastic and bizarre physical attributes designed for the sole purpose of attracting the ladies.

No known function, my aunt fanny! I've always thought snoods were very... suggestive. Either that or it's for turkey comic relief.

ETA: When I first saw the post title I thought it was snood as in olden-days crocheted hair net thing. I have one and I love wearing it to get my hair out of the way. I couldn't imagine why they'd need to be bigger than anyone else's.
