Now, now y'all! Chickens I can justify. He loves chicken eggs and he's used to chickens. Ducks are gonna take a little more work, not only in caring for them, but in convincing him that they have a place on this farm.

We started with 3 goats, then a stray duck, he needed some friends so we brought home 5 more ducks and DH always wanted chickens so we also got 6 chickens! Talk about impulse.
We were not prepared for the chickens, and looking back the ducks neither. I now have 3 ducks, they are Muscovy and they are good layers and setters. We hatched 4 clutches last summer. We did butcher some muscovy ducks and some were mules.
Their place on our little place is bug control, you would not believe me, but what a difference they made on mosquito control!
Also their meat is not like Peking duck, it is very lean, and grilled it is to die for! Tastes and feels like beef!
We also bake with the duck eggs, and my cakes and breads have never been better!
We do not house our ducks together with the chickens, the are very messy.
We have them in a covered pen, and let them out during the day.
They can fly, so do your homework!
We try to keep them close to our creek, but they like to wonder, and I have to make sure they do not go to my SIL house, she hates me, I mean them! But they are fun to have and I'd be lying if I said they weren't work, but since I only have 3 they are not so hard. I feed them and water once a day, unless it is really hot. I also made a tray that their water sits on so it doesn't get as muddy, they like to dabble in the muddy water!
I would like to have all my animals in one place, but right now it is just not possible, so that is where most of my work comes in!
We use wood chips for our runs floor, and in their coop, we add layers a few times then scoop it out and start over. It works the best for us.
We tried sand, but they just poop to much!
Chickens are easy, they don't mess up their water as much as the ducks, and their feed lasts longer!
So really it is up to you as to how muck work you want!
Just ask a lot of questions, and know what kind of pens and coop you want! Have fun!

There is a nothing better than a dunky duck egg and sourdough toast. And like mentioned above, cakes and breads with the richness of duck eggs....YUM!

G, start with chickens and see how it goes. Ducks are much messier than chickens. Get some experience under your belt then GO FOR THE DUCKS! When and if you do get some ducks, you will love them. They are so much fun to watch if they have a small pond of some sort to play in. Good luck with you order.

I ordered today and did not order any ducks. As far as our ponds go, for the time being I'll have to be content with the wood ducks that visit our bigger pond and Mr. (or Mrs.?) Crane that's been staying at the smaller pond.
