My son brought this home.....

I can't believe that any store would sell live animals to minors...cause we know they are drug-like lol

Seriously tho
How old are these kids?
What 'adult' was in charge of the 'field trip'?
And the store owner/policy??...Geeezzuuzz!

The whole thing just smacks of deluded irresponsibility!!
Rant over. Sorry.

I know Pet smart isn't the best place in the world, but (even for fish) at least you have to sign a contract when you "adopt" (read: buy) an animal from their store. I believe this makes it so minors cannot purchase an animal without parental consent.

I think it's clear here, that some people just see animals as stock, objects to have ownership over....and not living beings with needs.

Really? I know their dogs and cats require adoption contracts (because they are adopted out by private rescue groups, not sold by the store) but for fish and reptiles etc??? Maybe they have changed, I bought a ball python from them years ago and a few fish, no contract required, no care sheets given out, just lay your money down.

(And yeah, my parents would have killed me too if I brought a chick home from a school field trip....oh how things have changed! Where is the fear? LOL)

maybe it varies by store/district/state, but a couple years ago I was in petsmart for fish supplies and some kids were talking about how fun it would be to buy some goldfish and do something to them (maybe stomp them in the parking lot? I can't remember exactly) and when the store employee told them they had to sign a contract for the fish, they changed their minds and didn't buy the fish.

I also know they make you sign for small mammals and birds you get there. Although, I've bought many fish there without having to sign anything...maybe it was just a smart employee looking out for the fish :)

There was clearly a lack of adult responsibility going on there (not by you - by the store & the teachers/chaperones on the field trip). I would be LIVID if that had been my kid! I wonder how the other parents reacted if their kids brought home chicks? And I say this knowing that 1) I was a child that brought home a gold fish from the fair one time and wasn't even sure if my mom would let me keep it (she did) and 2) as an adult I've brought home numerous pets that my DH wouldn't approve of.
