My son rescued a baby, with 5 toes?

People like the ones selling that poor little baby just make me want to spit venom.

But tell your son that he is a great kid!!

Congrats on the new chickie too!! What will you name it???

My guess is silkie mix, but silkie being maybe only 1/4th due to lack of crest feathers and light colored skin. There are a few breeds with a 5th toe, with the ones off the top of my head being, silkie, fravoles, houdans, and sultans.

My son can't stand cruelty in any way shape or form, he knows I'll support him too. He is still thinking of a name, he's positive it's a "her" although I have no vague idea. Lot's of folks agree on the Silkie part, I wonder what the rest is? It's a sweetie no matter what! The biggest issue will be "Leave the chick with the other chicks,,, get the chick outta the bedroom!!!".

My opinion, I don't think it has any Silkie in it, there's no fuzz anywhere. Yes Silkies have five toes, but as Silkiechicken said, so do several other breeds.

Langshans don't have 5 toes, so there's an elimination.
Houdans have 5, but no leg feathers.
Faverolles do have 5 toes and feathered legs, and come in black (unofficially.)
Sultans have 5 toes, feathered legs, NO crest (even though they have a poofy head), and can come in black (unofficially.) There's a maybe!

I think it is a standard, and a hen. That's all the research I have, sorry *haha* If you would like pictures of these breeds, check out feathersite.com. And http://www.mypetchicken.com/chickenBreeds.aspx has nicely organized info of each breed. Tell your son we are all proud of him, and congrats on his new buddy!

I still think it has some silkie in it, although at most 1/4th. The silkie feather gene is not always expressed so just because it's not fluffy, doesn't mean it's not part silkie.

It is kind of fluffy,,, but it's filthy! I'm not sure how old it is so I don't want to get it wet, but it's so much smaller than the rest! I'm not wondering if it's a miniature.

Ok,, this little one has a really strange behavior. It hunches over and runs around so fast it looks like a little black mouse! It makes a high pitched squeek rather than sqawk if you can figure that out.

I'd say it has some silkie in it and I think it will have a head poof later on too.
Look at that 2nd pic, see the long feather at the front of the head? That's the beginning of a poof!

I also think it may have some wyandotte in it too.
Isn't that a rose comb?

It looks a lot like my 3 mixes. ( dad is wyandott, mom is a silkie X ?, both bantams).

Look at these pics,

The little black head on the right is the 3rd baby from this cross, and he didn't show his poof until about 8 weeks old.
