I've really enjoyed this thread .I have had a couple odd experiences when much younger, but not sure they were paranormal, or night terrors, or what.
From an early age, I've had an irrational fear of being home alone. I remember once when my brother was supposed to be babysitting me, when I was about 6, I was scared to even be out in the living room by myself. He was in his room with the door shut, and wouldn't let me in. It was a long, stressful evening until my parents got home.
Some time later (or earlier, not sure) I was sleeping under our dining room table. For some reason, my brother and I used to argue who got to sleep there, like it was cool or something. He usually won. Not sure if I just up and decided to do it on my own, or what, but I woke up in the middle of the night, under the table. As I lay there, I heard footsteps coming from the kitchen next door. Slow, quiet, footsteps. I was so scared, I could not move for a long time. Eventually, I got up enough courage and RAN up stairs to my sister's and my bedroom.
Another time, still at a fairly young age, I had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. So I got up, walked to the hallway, and somehow ended up at the top of the stairs instead of the bathroom doorway (only 3 feet apart at most). I was sitting there, and a HUGE black spider, like the size of a tarantula, came out from under one of the bedroom doors, and slowly walked into the bathroom. I was so scared I was crying, terrified and all alone because everyone else was sleeping.
It's been so long, and I was so young, I could have been sleeping, though it seemed very real at the time. Or maybe my imagination was playing tricks on me? Who knows. I do know I WAS awake for what happened later.
We moved a town over, into a new house. I continued to be terrified of staying home by myself. One evening, sometime in winter, I was home alone, my worst fear. I was probably about 12 or 13, so not really that young. I was watching tv, trying to calm myself down. I kept thinking I heard noises in the basement, and was watching the basement door. I got up and started to pace. All of the sudden, I heard, very clearly, men's heavy shoes on the wooden stairs, coming up to the door. I FREAKED. I ran out the back door, in my socks, no coat, and over to my friend's house. Her mom said my face was as white as a sheet. She sent her son over with me to check things out. My own brother came home at the same time, and they searched around outside, and in, and found.............nothing. I was not asleep. To this day, almost 30 years later, I remember that horrible, breathless fear.
My fear stayed with me for many more years, over many moves. My parents traveled a lot, so I would spend a week or two at a time, by myself, in large, empty houses. It was not fun. Spent a lot of time being very, very scared, and spent more than a night or two UNDER the bed, sleeping.
Fast forward to the last house we lived in together as a family,or at least my parents and I. The largest house yet. I started out with the same irrational fear, then, it gradually just faded away. And now, I live in BFE, by myself, and have never felt safer. Was it just a phobia and I imagined those things? I didn't think that phobias just went away on their own.
Also, my mother died 12 years ago, while we lived in the huge house. My dad remarried, and they still live there, with my stepsister who is 40 (she has issues). A couple months ago, my dad casually mentioned 'the ghost'. I went WHAAAAT?? WHAT ghost? He went on to describe some odd noises, like the sound of someone coming home, opening the garage door, then the kitchen door, and walking across the tile in the kitchen. This was loud, too, so much so that my dad got up and went to have a look. No one. He also describes being awake early in the morning, before his wife wakes up, laying in bed, and getting a very deep feeling of well-being, and he knows it's my mom.
I went back to my old bedroom with a recorder and tried to do some EVP work ,but got nothing. I believe it's her, though.
So many of my friends have had experiences, that I whole heartedly believe it. From men in period clothing walking through 100 year old homes, to a bad ghost harrassing and terrifying my friend and her family, chasing them down the hall, then slamming into the door, to patio furniture being stacking in the pool.
The friend with the bad ghost also had a brief telekinetic period, back in her twenties. She was at home with a friend, and was very mad a her current boyfriend. All of the sudden, the loaf of bread on the counter flipped up into the air, all by itself. Her friend looked at her and asked if my friend did that. My friend replied that she wasn't sure. Freaky.
Anyway, loving all the stories. Thanks for sharing.
