My Spring 2013 Meat Bird Journal

I have thought about trying this but I need to do more research on it first. My meat bird coop is tucked away in the woods (zero sunlight) and their coop is well ventilated and they still have issues with the heat. But last year at the end of June it was 100 degrees for a 5 day stretch so that obviously didn't help!

T-minus one week till show time. Can't wait to hear those little peeps again!

The chicks arrived this morning at 6:30am. To my surprise when I opened the box, they put 103 chicks in there! I only ordered and paid for 60. I really don't have the room for them all so I will either sell them or butcher them at cornish game hen size. I suppose the hatchery thought I needed some extra packing peanuts for this -6 degree day!

Bought 100lbs of 22% meat bird starter for $27.20 and a pound of Broiler Booster for $20.00 and three waterers and 3 feeders for $15.00 on 2/19/13.

When I first opened the box there was one struggling to stand but I helped it get some water and food and now it's up and running around like crazy with the rest. They are all PERFECTLY healthy. I can't believe it. We will see how the next few days progress. I highly recommend Schlecht's Hatchery!!!

WOW...where did you get 100# of feed for that cheap!?!

I have 75 coming from McMurray on April 1st so I'm going to be following your progress with the Schlecht birds. I only feed fermented feed and my meatbirds last year were the best I've ever had as far as flavor!!

Good luck!!

I buy all my feed (and always will) from Heims in St.Cloud, MN. It's a family run business and I buy it direct from their original mill. They are so friendly and their prices are hard to beat.
I raised my first meaties from McMurray and they were great, but a bit over priced. I raised my second batch from Welp and they were pretty good, too.

Last year I did two batches of meat birds and didn't keep very good track of their progress. It was my first year and I kind of had a rough estimate on how much it cost me in feed and birds but I didn't add in the cost for bedding, foodsaver bags, and so on. So I am starting this thread to help me keep track of everything that goes into this year's project and hopefully post a few pictures of the bird's progress.

1/14/13- I ordered 60 Cornish X pullets from Schlect Hatchery to arrive the week of February 18th. My total for the birds and shipping came to $73.00 even. I didn't think that was so bad, pullets are only 95cents a piece and their customer service was great. I have high hopes for these birds. Here is a link to their website: http://www.schlechthatchery.com/
Wholy cow That is cheap I paid about 118 for 50 @ mcmuray

McMurray's are quite frankly way over priced. You can get them so much cheaper other places and get the same results. Another great place to get meat birds is from Welp. They still weren't as cheap as Schlecht's but were the exact same as McMurray's. I think Schlecht's can keep their prices down because they are a small family business. It was a pleasure doing business with them.
