I am so upset, I went to feed my chickens yesterday and one of my dogs got in the coop. She attacked one of my 6 week old RIR's Mabel. When I finally got my dog out and checked on Mabel she seemed ok. She made it through the night and was doing ok today. I finally got her to eat and I thought she was doing ok. I wend to check on her after dinner and she was dead. I am so mad at the dog, but can't be too mad because she is a dog. I didn't think I would be this upset over the loss of a chicken. Well now I know I absolutely can't trust the dogs around my chickens. On another note if anyone wants a mini schnauzer they can have her!!!!

I feel ya! My dogs would do the same thing .. we are soooooooooooooo careful to not let the dogs and chickens out at the same time..

I'm so sorry ...

Don't be too mad at the dog .. it's really the owners fault ..

Things happen

In my opinion once a dog kills they usually keep it up... I have heard of people tying the dead chicken to the dogs necks for several days and letting it start to rot ... after that they never did it again... the thrill of the hurt is over ...

I know some people would not agree with that but it works sometimes and saves future killings

I wont keep a dog that kills animals..

now my husbands dog kills animals and we keep him chained up now so the chickens can run..

I would have gotten rid of him..

People always call animals "stupid" when the animal outsmarts them

Leave the dog in the house, or in it's kennel, before you ever even open the coop door.
Now that your dog likes to eat chickens, you had better beef up your coop into fort knox, if it isn't already. I personally would go with hot wire if I had a chicken-killing dog.

Not only is that wrong it is quite inhumane.

In my opinion. That is the dogs nature and if that can't be allowed or watched closely than the dog needs to be given to someone that can. Or the chickens kept up for awhile. I am sorry if this sounds harsh but I feel VERY strongly about these kinds of things.

On another note, I am sorry for the OP. I know it is upsetting and I hope that you can keep them seperated.

Oh come on. Now you've learned the hard way that you have to keep them separate. The idea of getting rid of the dog is absurd. As a dog and chicken owner you have to build a coop and run that keeps the dog out and the chickens in and they will all be ok. Geeeez I'd take the dog if you'd throw it out for that. Poor pup.

SarahBeth, I think you are totally correct. It is not a dumb dog. It is a fact of nature and was bound to happen without being watched or managed between seperating times out in the yard. Can't blame the dog.

I'm sorry about your loss. I think many people have learned the hard way that it's safer to keep dogs and prey (chickens) seperate when they are not supervised. Sure, there are some dogs and breeds that are safe around chickens, but most dogs, even very good dogs just need supervision and guidance around small animals. Now that you know, just keep them seperate. My Doxie is a fantastic dog that has visited the sick and dying in nursing homes, loves babies and children and excells in obedience. She also wants anything small and fuzzy/feathery dead and ripped to shreds. I know it, so I keep her seperate. It would be nice if all of our animals could co-exist together, but often that is wishful thinking. Try not to be too mad at your dog, she was just doing what her instincts told her to do.

The coop is dog proof, it was when I went in she got in the door. It was all my fault. She is small and sneaky and doesn't listen that well. I am not getting rid of the dog, just upset over the whole thing. I am now taking the broom with me so I can keep her away while I open the door and go in. I'm not hitting her with it. I do love this little dog but she does make me mad. I had to go after her for more than 2 blocks with no shoes on because she just started running. She is just naughty and all the dog training in the world hasn't helped her, she just does her own thing. Oh well, thanks everyone its alot harder to lose a chicken than I would have imagined. I didn't realize how attached I had become already.
