I was sitting in here, in my bedroom, online, chilling out and the dogs started barking. Darn it,, I don't want to put my shoes on and go see why!!! But I did. Out at my gate was one of my students from a couple of years ago and an elderly lady I didn't know. My student came up and hugged me and said he needed a favor, (sigh,, of course...). Then the favor,,, the lady with him was a neighbor of theirs, she lives alone, doesn't speak English, has no family in the area and is on food stamps and a small SS income from her deceased husband. He said she was at the local store (Stires) and didn't have quite enough money to buy a dozen eggs so he asked if I would be willing to give her a dozen eggs and he would clean my yard in exchange. That right there told me that he learned the most important lesson I've tried to teach all of my students,, humanity. She got two dozen and told if she needs more come back for a refill and he was told to go clean her yard instead!
That made my day, just knowing this teenage boy would offer to clean someone else's yard in order to help an elderly neighbor out.
