Bought these two girls as a few months and they were sold as Cuckoo Marans. The older they get, the more they're looking like Barred Rocks. I do have a younger Barred Rock in the flock but her face and legs look a tad different so that's what throws me off. They're about 5 months old and just started laying two very different shades of brown eggs. These are my sweetest girls and I wont love them any less...just want to know what exactly they are lol. TIA!

edit: I can try to get some better body/profile shots if needed. One of the photos was taken about a month ago, with a Buff Orpington of the same age for comparison.

They look like barred rocks. Barred rocks are more striped and Marans are not as consistent in barring. What color are there legs and feet? If the bottoms of their feet are yellow it’s a rock if it’s a white/pink they are a Marans.

I added a picture of my Marans to see the difference in pattern.

I'll have to check that! The legs of my confirmed Barred are more yellow. I'll look at the foot bottoms. I guess I was expecting a slightly darker egg color as well from the Marans. The one is laying eggs that are barely tinted. They're great layers though, so no complaints!

Cuckoo Marans aren’t known for laying dark eggs. You need French black copper Marans for that.

Here are some photos of their legs and feet - I guess the bottoms are pinkish over a yellowish tone. The first photo is of my Barred Rock with the much more yellow legs. I guess they are probably Marans after all? My husband and I have been betting on this and it looks like maybe he won :p Thanks again for the fast replies so far! I love this community!

The first is definitely a Barred Rock, yellow legs & yellow beak!
