Background: I got a incubator and did some work on it and then went in search of some hatching eggs for a test run. Well craigslist led me to an interesting woman who probably thinks it's still 1969 and kept humming Jimi Hendrixx Purple Haze over and over... I should of known when she told me she lived in the school bus on the property that something might be a little off.

She told me that the breed is a super secret selection of Maran's, Americana, and Cream Leg bar to create a super chicken that will lay a large dark green egg. And I shouldn't let these chicks out of my site/sight and not tell anyone about them (I was wondering why she had all this same information on craigslist for everyone to read but whatever).

So into the incubator my eggs go after I stabilize them to room temp.. I kept wondering why I couldn't see through the eggs when I tried candling them and figured it was because the shell was so dark chocolate. Well I realized when only 2 little chicks hatched that she told me to grab 4 eggs that were in a nest and I did write on the egg "new" and the other eggs she had in her house and I wrote "old" on them. But I looked at the carton she sent home with me and I noticed it says "hard boiled eggs"?????? I honestly think Miss Woodstock gave me a dozen hard boiled eggs! I thought they felt heavy but it's been so long since I've raised chickens from eggs and only comparison was my gals medium brown eggs and thought maybe these would be heavier. She told me the eggs in the nest were from younger hens and because of that they were smaller/lighter.

Anyways, she showed me several breeds of chickens on her property, she did have some caged up although the eggs in the nest were out in a open barn. She told me she had a large Barnevelder rooster but I didn't see him. I did see the Cream Leg Bar rooster and several hens that looked like Marans. They supposedly were separated by sides..

So trying to figure out what did hatch. As these are the only 2 out of 16 eggs that are going to hatch.

Light colored one we are calling Millie and she is a giant! Easy twice the size of the little black chicken we are calling Onyx.

Millie is pretty self explanatory on the pictures.

Onyx hard to take a pic of a darker chick but she has a round white spot on head and darker legs (no feathers).

Thanks in advance!

At this age I have no ideas, but your story is very well written and soooo funny. gl

Thank you :)

I'm not portraying it half as crazy as the experience was, and made mistake of leaving my phone number because she technically owes me another dozen eggs as she didn't have change for a $10. Now I get calls every couple of days with her trying to sell me something else LOL! No mention of any more secret experiment eggs~! I'm thinking that is because they get mixed with onions and mayo.

Yeah probably going to have to let them mature, I've a feeling Millie is a larger meat breed as that gal has some thighs on her or we need to look into weight watchers.

Where Onyx is petite, bossy, and demanding and I'm thinking there is a bantam breed in her somewhere with some Marans.
