My urban coop [Chickens moved in! Updates on page 6]

So, after doing a little bit of reading, I see that you have the programmer (transmitter) that you can link to any number of outlet/switches in order to turn things on/off.

So you've got (or you will get) the programmer that is set to go on, like you said above, 1 hour after sunrise and sunset with the "on" cycle only being 3 minutes. Are you able to set the timer/programmer to only be on for the 1 minute required to operate the motor/door or is the minimum time between events 3 minutes?

Lastly, do you know if there is anything wrong with using a usual plug-in timer to control the motor you have? This would mean that you'd have a good 15 minutes or so of "on" time before the peg for the 'off' cycle could click the timer off, if you know what I mean?

Thanks in advance for any information, sorry to have hijacked your post about your coop to ask questions!

I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a regular dial-type timer to control the door. Obviously it would mean adjusting all those little pegs every month or so as the days get longer or shorter. The motor turns itself off at the end of its cycle so you could leave power on for 15 minutes then turn it off. I read one review of the motor where someone said leaving the power on burned out the transformer, but it was only one review so who knows how credible it was. I believe the X10 controller can be programmed to 1 minute increments but the signals travel through the power lines in your house and from my experience sending too many signals too close together tend to lead to lost signals. That's why I'm thinking something like a 3 minute on/off interval.

We have been using a regular dial timer (the type with the pins) for several months now with the add-a-motor. It works perfectly! It takes all of 30 seconds to reset the pins for the fall/winter months.

Just wanted to say awesome job on the coop!!!

Totally green with envy and great craftsmanship on the construction.

I'm going to use your completed coop to hopefully sell the wife on letting me construct a new one from the ground up eventually.

Can't wait to see the completed coop!

Well the coop is finally out of the basement and in the backyard. Yes, it all came apart and fit (barely) through the basement door.

Now I can finish the roof and the windows, level and square everything up, plane the doors so they close properly, add the latches, touch up the paint, put down sand underneath...

Well I'm getting closer to being done.

That is a beautiful coop! I love the photos of the chicks, then the no-so-chicks. Look like mine - growing apace with the coop. I'll put my photos up this weekend when I get the girls installed.
Nice work and thanks for sharing.

I have to ask, what is the name/brand of the green paint color?

Our coop is a very similar one, but looks tanner when I take a picture of it

This is the um-teenth LIME GREEN coop I've seen, there's even one down the street from me. I like the look, its clean, bright and energetic and homey and adorable. It's HAPPY. But how did everybody know it would be the "IN" chicken coop color? How did I get out of the loop on this?

Mine is still not painted, only primer since last summer. I have to wonder what will be the LIME "IN" chicken coop color for next year?
