I've been trying for three years to get chicks to hatch from the wealth of broodies I've been blessed with, but no eggs have hatched until now. I'm the proud chick mama of an hours-old baby Brahma!

The broody mama is Linda, a two-year old Speckled Sussex. She has one more egg she's still sitting on, and the baby is alert and very healthy, but it prefers to snooze under Linda to being held by me, voicing its preference loudly.

I'll post a photo in the morning when the light is good for picture taking. Maybe there will be two by then!

By the way, Linda has been broody a total of nine times in her two years of life, and this is her second attempt to hatch eggs.

Awwwww! Your very first GrandChick!

I can still recite the pedigree of mine: This is Samantha, hatched by Buffy, from Rebecca's egg, and the daddy is Carl. Samantha is three years old now.

So I totally understand your excitement. :D

Congrats!!! It is ao thrilling!!! Our first ever natural chick( not a hatchery sent day-d but one who was fertilized and hatched here!) Surprised us in the rain last Sunday. Happy healthy indepwndent cuss. Daddy is a bantam cochin and mom??? Our broody sweetie pie is sitting on three different style eggs and I never saw the shell to determine what we have! Again a blessing and exciting time. So glad for your broody hen for all her hard work

Here's Linda with the hatchling. the other egg didn't hatch 24 hours after the first, so I took it from Linda and opened it up. There was a non-viable chick inside, fully formed. Very sad it couldn't make it out of the egg like the other one. But as you can see, this chick seems very happy and healthy.

And the chick that didn't make it.
