My Very First Emergency: Egg Bound? Pictures Included

Thanks all! I'll keep an eye on her and keep you posted.

Even if she is broody I probably won't be using her to hatch any eggs. We just got two new baby ducklings (our first every) and those alone are keeping us pretty busy.

How long ago did you get those ducklings??? Maybe you could slip them under her and have her raise them. Although, they may be too old and she may not have been broody long enough to believe it, lol. But if she will take them, it sure will make your life easier...... and your house will smell better, too.

I'll be getting a box o' ducklings in the mail from Holderreads tomorrow and we are going to try to slip them under the broody goose who has been sitting on infertile eggs for a month.
We have had good luck doing that with broody ducks and hens before, but this is our first try with a goose.

Wish us luck!!

I think I jumped the gun. It's looking like she's not broody, but even better news is she's not looking as bad as she was before. I'm hoping that she's back to normal now. I'll keep an eye on things and give an update as things continue to progress.

Thanks!

I know this post is old, but in my experience, that just looks like she has soft shells and if that's the case, they can break while she's still laying on it and make a mess of her vent area. My chicks have had it from time to time and we would find soft shell eggs on the floor in the middle of the coop under the perch in the morning sometimes. Or, if they were still on the nest, they can rise off with egg goo stuck to them. If she's acting normally then I wouldn't worry too much, but I would add some oyster shell or even egg shells to the feed for extra calcium. Oh- and of course, try to clean up her bum with some warm soapy water. It's hard to do and if it still doesn't come off, I have actually trimmed the feathers with scissors. Good luck!

Thanks jojov! We've still got an eye on her and her back end still looks swollen and void of feathers, but she's acting normal every day. Her sister has been trying to go broody, so I think her sitting on the next before may have been her thinking it was that time.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted!

Sorry, I didn't keep everyone posted.

We ended up re-homing her to someone who wanted a Delaware hen. We told him about her "problems" but he still wanted her. From the last time I posted until the time we gave her up she seemed perfectly fine other than the feather loss.
