my very first "shop project" evar! LOOK!

Great job! Now you can start on the next one or the expansion! Make a whole apartment complex for the silkies!

Looks great! Well done.

I roll the hardware cloth up evenly and cut it with a metal cutting blade on a side grinder. Noisy, throws LOTS of sparks, but you can do several pieces at one time! Eye and ear protection a must.

About the legs- turn it upside down, attach legs securely. If it's too unwieldy to lift upright, toss a rope over a rafter and hoist it upright that way.

Women don't have to work harder, just smarter!

technodoll,

very nice coop just please put a better lock on the door. A coon could open it with one paw behind his back.

I once spent days making a run cover out of fiberglas panels and 2 x 4's. Didn't know how to use anything but hand tools. Nobody gave me any advice or any offer of help. THey just waited till I finished and got it hoisted in place before they started criticizing and letting me know how stupid I was and how bad it looked. But it lasted for years and kept everybody dry , didn't come down from weight of snow, and because the fiberglas was slick, it was a breeze getting snow off it with a push broom.

Pretty is overrated. You made a a real good , serviceable coop you have every right to be proud of yourself. I know it sure gave ma boost of confidence, and sense of accomplishment. We are rookies and we learn as we go.

You inspire me.

I'm not joking either! I have a pre-built coop that I dismantled to try to better and paint, it's going slow but ok.
The real issue is making my own run. Seeing this though...makes me a little braver.

I've always wanted to build things, just a little afraid of failure!

Do you have metal shears? I think I'm remembering right (but would I remember if I wasn't?) Hardware cloth was a PAIN when we were building rabbit hutches, but the shears made it fairly easy--still have to watch the edges, but no more hand cramps like there were when I was using wire cutters.

Please excuse the rambling, I'm up with a sick (strep throat) kiddo tonight and am getting a bit punchy.

I agree with redrocketrooster, you're my inspiration too

For the last few weeks now I've wanted to build a portable brooder and have some really good ideas but everytime I show them to DH...well, let's just say he's not so positive. He's given a green light to the coop addition and remodel this summer, of which he'll be doing all the work while I get the tools

Don't get me wrong, I love him to death and appreciate all he can do (he's so smart and can fix/build ANYTHING so I think that's why I want to do it even more) but I'm so tired of trying to do something myself only to have him take over.
I had given up on my original portable brooder idea, but now I'm fired up again and really want to build it. Thanks for having this thread to re-motivate me

Awesome job on yours
