My Very First Time

Can you go back to the seller and swap one of the roosters for a female? Because that's what she said she sold you right? Your lives down the road will be more peaceful with a normal trio.

Im not sure ... i highly doubt it as they were given to us and actually my husbands friend from work got them from another co-worker... i could try to give one away and get another hen or two down the line but how do i know which one i should get rid of... the younger roo doesnt crow yet maybe i should keep him? Lol any advise is welcomed and appriciated thank you :)

Honest opinion? With your little kids and your set up I think you would be better off with just hens. Don't need roosters for eggs and most roosters do better with more room and more hens. Three or four hens could become quite tame and manageable for your kids, whereas roosters become less tame and much less manageable as they mature.

Thank you... we dont plan on leaving our pen this way, this was a temp fix as my husband literally came home from work on lunch two days ago with a basket of these three and said hey we have chickens lol... it was quite the surprise ! would it make any difference if we built a small moblie pen like ive seen pics on here? Ive read also that people keep their roos on a leash seperate is that important? And also is seperating them and joining new girls in the mix going to stress them out? I know i have a million questions sorry lol. But when i go "shopping" for hens is there specific things im looking for?

It is pretty important to know what kinds of predators you may have before you build a coop or 'chicken tractor' (mobile coop). So if you have dogs (fox, coyote, skunks, etc.) you may need a coop with fencing that goes into the ground so they can't dig under. Stuff like that. Your chickens still seem a little young, so I don't think you'll get eggs for a while yet. For sure I'd get rid of at least one of your roosters. At this point, you may be able to keep them a while to see their temperaments. Also make sure it is alright to keep roosters (and hens) in your area. I hope all goes well! Welcome to BYC! :)

I didn't mean to suggest there was anything wrong with your set up, sorry if I gave that impression. I just mean that setting up for three or four hens is SO much easier than putting a rooster in the mix. I don't think you can keep roosters on a leash. As they mature they can become a bit aggressive, just their nature, and I would think a leash might just exacerbate that. It's only been a few days, your kids aren't too attached, I would find a new home for the roosters and add a few more hens instead. Try to find hens the same age as yours to keep the initial socialization battles to a minimum. But if it gets a bit unpleasant, remind your kids these are descended from dinosaurs! Teaching moment!

No, no big deal no worries you didnt offend me in any way i apriciate all your help and feedback. We are allowed to have chicken in our small oklahoma town i know this because they are all over town and my neighbors on the next block have some as well... one guy lives behind the police station in a trailor park and has a small fenced area with several chickens and at least one rooster. Im going to check with the police station but im sure the local laws are pretty laid back. And i was just explaining that the day we got them we didnt have a chicken budget in place lol it may take a little time to get everything situated and im still learning more and more but i already know for sure under my back porch is not a permanent home it was just convienient at the time and we didnt know how bad chicken wire sucks either but we r making the best of it and 2 of my four girls (the 5and 6 yr olds)are actually visiting dad this week so they havent even met them yet so i have a dew days to sort all this out :) again tho thank you for your insights!!!! This site is pretty awesome!
