my very own micro farm

Big plans for the duck pond include expanding its size, adding a water access only duck area, new waterfall, small coves in the deep end for future plans of fish, and a good canopy over the top to cut down on tree leaves (pretty bad today when I cleaned it out).

'water access only'?

Where are you located?

Might want to put a 3-4" bottom drain in the pond...eventually you'll need to muck it out again.

@aart I use a decent sized pump for my waterfall which I turn onto the garden. However yesterday it just went into the compost. The drainage pipe would be a great improvement to scooping the muck out at the end with a bucket. And the "duck only" would be like a reverse pier idea with no dry access. And I'm in the sierra foothills.

@darinamy chickens have had access to my herb garden their whole lives and I would say that their eggs taste amazing but I don't know about tasting like a specific herb. It seems to me like that would have to be a huge portion of their diet. There's actually a pretty epic story on TED talks about natural foi gras(spelling?) I think it takes free range to a new level.

Rosco and the girls are reacting well today from their respective sides of the fencing. Pinky seems to be taking a huge interest since the initial "courting" which is great, I was worried her and brain are so much smaller than he is.

....
Like channel they can get into without allowing them access to the whole pond?

400
something like this. Quick sketch. But I hope the idea conveys. The square part is dry.

Oh I don't plan on trying to pen them up. Just wanted to give them an enclosed shelter that nothing else can get to but them. Wishful thinking for their egg laying. Already found 4 spots on the property where they've layed. Including the pond edge itself.

I've got a small pre-form pond my ducks use - and regularly find eggs when cleaning it out. So good luck :)

Had to look up chicken math. That's hilarious! Let's try it. I have 17 chickens and 5 ducks. Four are Silkies, so that is 2 chickens. Down to 15. 3 roosters that don't count. Down to 12. One is a bantam Cochin hen. Down to 14.5. Two are tiny Seramas so they don't really count at all. Only got down to 12.5. Round down to 12. Still a lot of chickens. Wow! I live in the city too. LOL Down to 4 ducks since one is a boy. 12 chickens and 4 ducks. I can get more! LOL
