I just finished nursing back to health my sweet hen named Fancy Pants! She was attacked by a dog a month ago. If I had been here when it happened I would have taken her to be put out of her misery but, my husband had called me and told me she was fine ...just lost some feathers. I had rescued her and her 4 sisters 5 years ago. I had never had hens before but someone had moved from their home and left them to die. They were alone about a week so one of the neighbors came to me for help. Everyone knew I did pit bull rescue for 5 years and had kept 4 myself ...they also knew I could never let an animal suffer. I had to learn fast and have loved every minute with these silly hens. They follow me around like a puppy. Anyway, I was told she just lost feathers so when I came home 4 hours later!!!!...of course I scooped her up out of her coop to love her and say goodnight. I was petting her and felt so,etching wet! Long story short...she spent the night in an emergency vet in their ICU. Broken wing and huge hole in her back 3" by 2"...took a month but she is now all sewed up...I only have the two left...Fancy and Henny Penny. Now that I thought I could take a breath my other girl is showing weird signs....started by stretching her neck and opening and shutting her mouth...no, nothing was stuck...next day she was acting confused. I thought she had gone blind because she couldn't get bet beak in her food bowl so I held it up to her beak so she would eat. Then she stopped eating so I scrambled an egg with her regular mash and fed it to her. Last night I picked her up and when I set her down she couldn't stand or balance... I can not figure out why she is like this...she was completely healthy just last week...calling me in the morning for her mash! Anyone know what is wrong with her?

Thanks everyone for welcoming me to your forum. I am from coventry Rhode Island. I had only two hens left out of the five I rescued. We were living in Danielson CT and actually had to leave our home because the person living next to us had it out for me! The reason!?!? He refused to allow me to go in my own back yard! Very long story but it came down to him calling town hall to have my hens removed because the zoning said we had about an inch less of land than what we needed to have them! There was no way anyone was going to make me get rid of my hen!!! Now we rent on our old friends 33 acres. I believe the neighbor may have done so,etching to the three that passed away because these 2 have been very healthy...that is until the dog jumped over their little fence that I would put them in so they could eat grass and bugs. Already told you about Miss Fancy Pants living threw a dog attack with a broken wing and gash in her back 3" by 2" .....I found out today what was wrong with Miss Henny Penny...and it's what I thought...she went blind! Has anyone else ever had this??? I thought there was something neurological going on because she refused to stand...when I would try to get her to stand she would flop around. Come to find out I was right in the first place...she was blind! Never heard of a hen going blind. Took her to a vet today..she did some testing of her reflexes and looked into her eyes, said I was right. She said that a hen can't live blind because that's their finest sense. She was just scared and confused because she couldn't see! Last night and this morning, I wrapped her up in a towel so she could feel secure. She always has responded to my voice so while wrapped up and me speaking to her..she would be calm. My friend picked me up to take her so that I could comfort penny on the drive. In the end she had to be humanly put down. The vet found a vein in her leg right away and she passed in my arms. Haven't stopped crying all day! Does anyone know how my other hen will do ALONE!!! I worked and prayed so hard to get Fancy Pants back to Penny because they were so close...now what am I to do? I don't and won't go get another hen because I end up loving them way to much! We can't really afford to do what we did for Fancy..over $1000 in the end but I am not the kind of person that will allow an animal to suffer. Yes, we could have put her down but I think I said that it happened 4 hours before I got home. She was still walking around! I would have never believed a hen could live threw that. But, if she was going to fight for her life...I was going to help her. Plus...I didn't want Penny to be alone...now I am in the same situation AGAIN!! Can a hen live alone? Please....HELP

I see that peopled welcomed me BUT I can't read anything I a half a second!!HELP........
