That was it....the plaid pajama bottoms....I changed into my jeans and they were fine.

makes sense chickens don't see your clothes as a thing to keep warm like us; to them your clothes as your feathers. So when you change your feathers they all go omg who is that stranger, what are they doing in my yard why are they throwing food at me! PANIC! your main clothes you feed them while wearing are your identity to them. anything different you will be treated with extreme prejudice

I find that if I am carrying something familiar like a feed bucket, they are quite comfortable. But if I am carrying something strange or unusual, like a rake, some cabbage leaves, or even a tiny camera, they are very afraid. Maybe they were not afraid of you but of those cantaloupe?
