My wife's design for Watering system...

Yeah, I can see that, gets mighty chilly up there. Doesn't whatever system you use freeze anyway? You could always go with galvanized sleeved inside a larger PVC to insulate it.

I am looking at doing the same kind of system for our new chicken house with 9 pens in it. Thanks for posting. I just know when I mention that I am putting nipples in my chicken pens though, my kids are going to be rolling on the floor.

I'm not in the mountains (approx 1000') here in Okanogan valley area, so I prolly don't get as cold as ya'll...

But yeah, I'm thinking of wrapping it with a heat tape and insulating it because of our winters, and I want to try to use PEX for some of it...

This will be my first 'chicken winter', so it should be interesting

. Prolly have to go with a trough heater like we use for the horses and it might end up being just a summertime waterer, but it would be worth it for the convenience.

We lived in a motor home for our first two winters here, and DH ran a PVC water line from our frost free spigot, wrapped with a heat tape, covered in pipe insulation then stuffed in bigger PVC, but it sat right on top of the ground. The line only froze twice in spots that were really exposed to wind and we had several below 0 nights. When it did freeze, we put the van over that section and ran it for a little bit, and the engine warmth thawed it right out...

Doncha just love that 'Mother of Invention' kinda life?!?!

Another one my wife made! Just a screened box with a cone-shaped indentation in the bottom that has a small hole in it so the flies can get in but not out. It's set on two bricks so the flies can get under it to get in. Banana seems to be the best attractant for them so far. And the top is hinged so you can dump out the dead ones every night. Much easier on the eye than using 2 liter bottles.

I was just describing this to hubby while we were at Lowes but when I told hubby I wanted to use a bucket, some PVC pipes and nipples to water the chickens I think he tuned me out to sound like the Charlie Browns teacher and went on with his shopping

Hopefully with your pics he will understand what I was talking about and we can make one. Im also worried about freezing in winter but I think we will come up with something to keep the water from freezing

hmmmm I'll bet in the winter time you could use a larger container for the water and put a water heater in it. Much like we do for our horse troughs in the winter.

I like it.... As soon as my coop get's moved to it's permanent position I'm gonna go for it.
