Thanks! My birds didn't need it in the summer bc they're in a shaded coop (old horse stable now quail/chicken house) with lots of ventilation

Nice. We built our coop from scratch from the ground up. Being a stable, yours must be pretty roomy.

If the 23% feed is a LAYER type feed there is no reason they shouldn't stay on it. I prefer LAYER type feed with the calcium in it and it is sold at 16% here so that's what my birds get.
It works for me. I am not a fan of giving any bird a choice to eat added calcium on the side.

My game bird feed has a 1.3% calcium but it's never given me bad eggs. It was recommended by the guy that sold me my quail and eggs. He breeds celadon layers so that what I have too

My bad they have a 20 square foot coop in half of the stable and we've been building the chicken coop in the other half this winter.

We would have made them a run or box but they were getting decapitated through the feeder holes ( those have been boarded and feed is now inside). They also had a window installed so they can see outside for egg production and their own entertainment. Lots of deer pass by year round.

How long does this dude keep his quail alive?

If your quail or not living longer than a year then I would say that feed will probably be okay but if you plan on keeping them around longer you really should consider buying some oyster shell or calcium supplement to put in their cages.

If they do not eat enough calcium they will start pulling the calcium from their own bones to use to make their eggs.
You won't see problems immediately but you eventually will.

Question, when I had chickens (laying hens) several years ago I fed them on a layer formula and offered extra calcium free-choice just in case. Is there any reason I shouldn't do the same with my quail once we get them? They won't eat it if they don't need it, right?

Aside--I plan to keep my adult male quails in with the laying hens. Will it hurt the males to eat the higher calcium feed intended for the hens? Should I try to find a feed with lower calcium and just give free choice supplemental calcium for the girls?
